Could a Cup of Coffee a Day Keep the Doctor Away?
Burdened with sketchy genetics that include, among other things, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer, my folks have turned to some pretty outlandish preventative measures throughout the years. Chief of which is a blended cocktail I like to call the Smoothie from Hell. What it is, in a nutshell, is a mishmash of cucumbers, bell peppers, bitter gourd, and apples grounded into a liquid state. I cannot even begin to describe the sort of assault this concoction mounts on the human taste pallet. Maybe, they’d think twice about subjecting themselves to this sort of torture, if they knew there were other, more appetizing, options to preserving good health…like ,say, a latte.
Believe it or not, a cup of Joe might be the ticket to reducing your risk for type II diabetes, liver cancer, and Parkinson’s! While the studies are ongoing, doctors have found evidence to suggest that coffee drinkers are 25-80 percent less likely to be diagnosed with these afflictions (with the lowest percentages being associated to colon cancer and the highest to Parkinson’s). Those who indulge in alcohol or cigarettes can also celebrate a rare piece of good news, as coffee has also been shown to lessen their chances of developing heart disease and liver damage.
Some of benefits that have been attributed to coffee are pretty obvious, i.e. it can improve a person’s mood…hello, how many of us feel better after our morning cup of coffee? While others may make you scratch your head, including findings that suggest coffee can prevent cavities. But all in all, coffee drinkers should rejoice, because our beloved drink may just save us from some of the scarier concoctions out there.
What are your thoughts? Do you supplement your diet with health drinks; if so, will they be replaced by a cup of coffee in light of the emerging research?
