ECM Mechanika Slim PID Overview
ECM’s Mechanika Slim PID is a compact heat exchanger espresso machine whose narrow build belies the sizable 1.9L stainless steel boiler housed within. As its name suggests, boiler temperature is controlled by a PID switch that can be used to select between one of three preset temperatures. For even greater precision and ease of use, ECM has added an LED screen which functions as a shot timer when the brew lever is engaged.
Features and Performance
In spite of its size, the Mechanika Slim PID is a heat exchanger espresso machine and is fully capable of brewing espresso and frothing milk simultaneously. The PID switch plays a part both in temperature regulation and selection and is used to enable other functions such as eco mode and pre-infusion. The three positions correspond to 248°F, 255°F and 262°F and allow users to quickly boost boiler temperature when in need of some extra steam power.
The Mechanika Slim PID is housed in polished stainless steel, with anthracite coated legs and blue steam and hot water valve discs complementing its austere design. Brew and steam pressure are each monitored with a dedicated gauge to the left and right of the E61 group and the cup tray features a set of railings to both house cups and for easy removal to access the water reservoir and the externally adjustable OPV.
To the bottom left of the E61, the newly added LED display is located above the power switch. By default, the display will remain blank when the machine is turned on and will only illuminate to confirm menu and temperature changes, alert you when the machine is heating up or the water tank is low, and to display a shot timer when the brew lever is engaged. Additional features include an optional pre-infusion mode to briefly wet coffee before extraction and an eco mode to power down the boiler after a set period of inactivity.
Why You Should Get It
At its core the Mechanika Slim PID is a simple yet powerful, compact and beautiful espresso machine. While the world of home espresso machines has gotten fairly complicated, this machine keeps things simple. The PID switch offers just enough control to accommodate the need for stable brew temps while allowing users to crank up steam pressure when the situation calls for it. If you enjoy daily milk drinks and more traditional espresso blends, this is the machine for you.
