Owning the Gaggia Anima Deluxe

The second tier in the Gaggia Anima line, the Deluxe is a super-automatic espresso machine that can brew espresso and froth milk automatically for a delicious and luxurious drink. See what we did there? An integrated cappuccinatore replaces the manual pannarello steam wand present on the standard Anima model, which draws milk from a pitcher up through the hose and dispenses it steamy hot from the spout into your cup. No need to master any frothing techniques with this machine, which we love, but, as the name implies, the cappuccinatore produces a frothy cappuccino milk and isn’t adjustable. So, if you prefer a finer latte milk, you may want to take a look at the Anima Prestige, which has an integrated milk carafe and can produce both styles no sweat. Like the rest of the Anima line, the Deluxe’s espresso spouts are high enough to brew into a travel mug; it’s highly programmable, with the option to personalize grind and coffee strength across five settings, and coffee temp across three; and the innovative Gaggia Adapting System, or as we like to call it “the brains behind the brewing operation,” which learns how fast to spin those ceramic burrs and how hard to tamp for the first fifteen or so brews for revolutionary results in the cup.

The Anima Deluxe is as easy to maintain as it is to use, with its intuitive maintenance alerts, automated descaling cycle, and, of course, Gaggia’s removable brew group, which can be easily rinsed by hand. Additionally, you can install a Mavea Intenza water filter in the Anima’s 1.7 L water reservoir to preserve your coffee’s taste and the machine’s longevity. In all, the Anima Deluxe has us delirious with luxury. Oops, we did it again. If the cappuccinatore isn’t a fit and you want more control, take a look at the standard Anima for the manual pannarello wand; if you want even more convenience, the Prestige model has an integrated milk carafe for one-touch brewing; and if you’re looking for a high-capacity machine for entertaining or an office space, the XL is the way to go.

  • Gaggia Adapting System

The grinder can be dialed in to one of five fineness settings, and uses the Gaggia Adapting System to adjust the grinding process. This ensures that the selected quantity of ground coffee is used for your espresso regardless of the blend you're using. The Anima also features a bypass doser which allows you to fill the brew group directly with pre-ground coffee for decafs.

  • Cappuccinatore Milk Frothing System

The Cappuccinatore is an automatic frothing system that siphons milk from a container, froths it, and dispenses it directly into your cup. To operate, simply place your glass beneath the spouts and press the "Milk Froth" button located on the front of the machine. The Cappuccinatore can also be used to dispense hot water for drinks like cafe Americanos and hot tea.

  • Automated Cleaning and Maintenance

The Gaggia Anima Deluxe has an alert system that will notify you if the dregs drawer or drip tray need to be emptied, the bean hopper needs to be refilled, or it’s time to descale. Additionally, the removable brew group and Mavea Intenza water filter compatibility make keeping the Deluxe in tip top shape simple.

So far, so good!
Review by Sa R. on 30 Mar 2018 review stating So far, so good!
This is my first automated espresso machine, so I don’t have much to compare it to; however, I can mention a few things that might help others in the same boat I was in.
For the price, It seems this machine performs most functions as others but at a lower price, so it seems you are getting a good bang for your buck.
You do have to keep an eye on the water and coffee levels as other reviewers have stated. There is no indication you are running low. But since I wasn’t willing to pay the big bucks, I can deal with that. I just check it before every use.
As far as size goes, the Gaggia Anima fits on my kitchen counter, but you’d have to slide the machine forward to get the water tank out. Also, the depth of the machine is greater than the depth of the upper cabinets. For these reasons, I opted to place the machine elsewhere to eliminate these issues.
I have the Deluxe model, which has the Cacciatore (however you spell that). It gives a good frothy foam which is good for cappuccinos. It doesn’t seem you can adjust the type or amount of foam but I like that you can also get the Panela wand and swap out if you’d like.
I like that the machine has an espresso lungo button. I actually use it quite a bit.
So far, i’ve Only tried the Lavazza Espresso Super Crema coffee beans. It seems to have a good flavor and a nice crema is produced. I tried sipping a straight shot to see what it tasted like, and it was more bitter than I thought it would be. My husband who drinks his coffee black, says it’s good though. He has drank espresso in many countries and feels the espresso from this machine is just as good. The coffee/espresso produced is definitely stronger than regular coffee. So there is definitely a difference. Two double shot cafe’s and i’m Zinging!
I was surprised the hottest temperature setting isn’t hotter, but it’s perfect for me. I want to say it might be around 120-130 F, but I haven’t tested it.
I always keep grind setting on second finest, so I haven’t had a chance to play around with that. But for now, that setting seems to be fine. There are 5 settings. I’ve only used medium and 1 finer than medium.
Overall, I like the machine and am happy with the products and the customer service from WLL as a first time customer.

Works well
Review by GLENN on 27 Nov 2017 review stating Works well
It makes a nice cup of coffee and is highly customizable. Wish there was a better way to know when the beans are running low. Can't see the bean level easily and machine doesn't have ability to let you know.

Haggis Anima Deluxe
Review by Neal E. on 20 Nov 2017 review stating Haggis Anima Deluxe
Bought this to replace our 8 year old Gaggia Titanium. Very pleased with this new machine. I was concerned about the cappuccinotore, but it works week and is easy to clean. I prefer my Expobar semi-automatic, but this Gaggia is a nice upgrade to the Titanium for our winter home.
