Rocket Espresso Appartamento Overview

This color variation of the Rocket Espresso Appartamento is an exclusive customization offered by Whole Latte Love.

Rocket is a stickler for detail and the Appartamento really highlights that fact. Its hyper stylized steam and hot water knobs feature an easy grip gear design and Rocket’s iconic “R”; the wide feet resemble espresso pucks, and the laser cut side panels reveal a ruby underbelly, all of which is rounded out by a striking mirror finish. Like any Rocket fan, we’re in love with the aesthetics on this compact machine.

Features and Performance

As a heat exchanger, the Appartamento can brew and steam at the same time, so there isn’t any downtime between brewing and steaming or multiple milk-based drinks. An E61 group head keeps the brew water temperature stable, by syphoning water from the boiler, through the group, and back, to ensure a consistent temp throughout.

Rocket redesigned their E61 to incorporate a dual pre-infusion system, which consists of a static pre-infusion chamber and a mechanical element that has a progressively working piston, resulting in aromatic, crema-rich extractions. This machine is beauty and brains wrapped up into one.

Internally, the Appartamento employs a large 1.8 L copper boiler, which, in concert with a 1200 watt heating element, makes for impressive strength brew after brew. Integrated electronic sensors monitor the boiler and reservoir levels and alert you to low levels. If, for whatever reason, these warnings are ignored, the Appartamento shuts down to avoid a dry-boil. This keeps the machine functioning at its best for years.

Why You Should Get It

One of the nicest things about buying a Rocket machine is it comes with a really in depth training guide and manual, plus, they’re one of the very few brands to include a high quality metal tamper with their machines rather than a dinky plastic one you’ll never use. They really go the extra mile to make set up easy and ensure you’re ready to brew soon after unboxing the Appartamento. For added temperature stability, check out the Giotto Type V or Mozzafiato, both machines employed a PID controller for brew water that’s temp-stable to the degree.

This product comes with plastic cup rails. The metal cup rails are sold separately here.

  • Reimagined E61 Brew Group

In a traditional E61 brew group, hot water is constantly circulated between the boiler and brew-group to ensure proper brewing temperature. Rocket incorporates a dual pre-infusion system into their E61, which consists of a chamber and mechanical working piston, to aid the extraction and ensure the grounds are fully saturated upon brewing.

  • Heavy-Duty Boiler

At the heart of the Appartamento is its 1.8 liter copper boiler, equipped with a 1200 watt heating element. The copper design shows improved heat retention and temperature stability, resulting in greater energy efficiency. Passive heat from the boiler also heats the removable cup warmer on the top of the Appartamento.

    gridimage-2
  • No-Burn Stainless Steel Steam Wand

Rocket Espresso’s patented cool-touch technology ensures that the steam wand is safe to use, since only the nozzle gets hot. The heavy-duty wand has a two-hole tip and is engaged with a large ergonomic control knob at the top of the wand. Below the steam wand is the steam pressure gauge; the machine is at steaming pressure when the gauge measures around 1 bar.

    gridimage-3
  • Water Sensor & Reservoir

The Appartamento comes equipped with an electronic microprocessor controlled automatic low-water-level sensor that will automatically shut off the machine to prevent a dry boiler. A warning system will also alert you when the 2.5 L water reservoir needs to be replenished. A water softener can be used in the reservoir to increase the length of time between descales.

Great machine!
Review by Bradon F. on 14 Jul 2018 review stating Great machine!
I’ve had my Synchronika for a few days now and it has been great. It arrived in perfect condition (no shipping damages). I had to change my shipping address after I placed my order and customer service got it updated quick and easy. What little interaction I’ve had with Whole Latte Love has been great though. The only issue I had was that out of the box my Synchronika had the PID boiler temp set to the max. Being my first prosumer machine and first machine with a PID also, I pulled a couple terrible shots before I noticed the temperature was too high. You can chalk this up to inexperience but just thought I’d mention it for anyone else. Make you sure you check the PID settings before using it for the first time. Everything else has been perfect so far. Couldn’t be happier.

Stepping up to the big leagues!
Review by Noah G. on 25 Apr 2018 review stating Stepping up to the big leagues!
After using more of an entry level machine for the past 6 years I couldn't be happier with making the decision to go 'prosumer.' I was blown away at the difference between the two machines and how much control the ECM machine gave me. I also couldn't believe I still had a learning curve after years of espresso making! Having the naked portafilter was also a game changer so I could see what was happening with my shots as I dialed in the machine. You will be surprised how different shots can taste with very subtle adjustments on in inputs. I have a favorite pizza place in Seattle that has a hand pull espresso machine; (shout out to Tutta Bella on Stone Way) for years I haven’t not be able to match their espresso until I dialed in the Synchronika and now I can top it! The ability to pull a few shots in a row and have enough steam to make a few lattes is also sooooo much nicer than my old single boiler machine. I haven't come close to running out of boiler or steam power after making a few in a row! Of course, it also looks fantastic on my coffee bar as well and everyone who comes over notices it.

To review the ECM Synchronika against the others in the dual boiler categories I am so glad I chose this model after initially looking at the Rocket machine. I love the toggle levers for the steam and hot water, they work great, look great, and it is easier than turning handles. The shot timer is KEY! Just this alone is reason enough to buy it over the Rocket machine. The PID on the front looks great with the silver on silver look and adds to the machine rather than taking away from the look. The mirrored finish is striking, and the machine stands out from the other stainless appliances in the kitchen. I haven't plumbed in the machine yet but will soon and take advantage of the ability to pre-infuse the shot. The video that Mark and the guys put together comparing the 4 machines is great - I would recommend that you watch it if you are trying to decide between a couple models.

Finally – the crew at wholelattelove.com is just fantastic and I couldn’t be happier than to buy the machine from them. The education, expertise, customer service, and responsiveness is second to none. From the purchase to helping dial in shots, to advice on coffee they have been great to deal with. Thanks guys!!

First Machine for Espresso Virgin
Review by Steve Y. on 11 Feb 2018 review stating First Machine for Espresso Virgin
Ok, I must admit I was way in over my head when purchasing this as my first ever espresso machine but man is this thing sexy. I've done a lot of research, read a bunch of reviews, and what sealed the deal was Mark's videos on the ECM machines. What a beautiful machine. It's like a piece of art on my kitchen countertop. Everything worked perfectly right out of the box. It's heavy and well built. I can't really compare with other machines but I'm confident this is pretty high quality. The mirror finish is exquisite and programing the temps on the PID is super easy. The portafilters and the tamper are well made. Nice and solid and heavy. The portafilter doesn't lock all the way 6 o'clock in the group head but the Whole Latte Love wiki states it'll be tight on new machines and it'll loosen as you use it more. Good to know. Steam is powerful.

After about 30 shots in, a few bags of beans, I'm starting to get the hang of it. Pulling in 18g dose, ~25-30s brew time, ~36g yield consistently. Still learning but no longer an espresso virgin! Thanks for making this experience unforgettable.

Nice Mack Truck
Review by Lance K. on 24 Dec 2017 review stating Nice Mack Truck
I have had 3 previous espresso machines (a Saeco super-automatica, an Expobar Office Control, and most recently a QuickMill Silvano), and this just blows the others away. The power and ease with which it steams and brews makes everything just so much easier. And this baby really feels like it's built to last. I finally learned by lesson and installed a BestMax Premium filter/softener in-line to the plumbed intake. No more mixing water and checking for empty reservoirs. Fits nicer than I thought it would too - tucked back into a corner. Still using my 10+ year old Rocky grinder (just replaced the blades to coincide with the new machine). I love my new setup!

I Whole Latte LOVE This Machine
Review by Fred G. on 14 Dec 2017 review stating I Whole Latte LOVE This Machine
I've had a single boiler machine for the past 8.5 years. It has been a great machine and I've learned a lot about making espresso and owning a machine from brewing, replacing parts and doing repairs on this particular piece of hardware. This past year, it became apparent the machine was starting to show it's age and I did not want to spend anymore time and $$ replacing parts or struggling with taking the machine apart, which was more than half the battle. When I discovered the ECM Synchronika and saw (from the WLL videos) how well designed and put-together this machine seemed to be and I was intrigued.

After more research and comparisons, I decided I would upgrade to the ECM Synchronika. I love the dual boilers and the PID temperature control. The machine is built like a tank and very solid. I haven't taken the side panels off yet, but that was one of the selling points that sold me on this machine. The electronics are easily accessible and well shielded from the radiant heat produced by the boilers and copper pipes. That was an issue with my old machine - the electronics casing would melt from the radiant heat produced by the steam and hot water valves and would eventually burn out the electronics and wiring harness. Had to replace that $100+ part 3 times.

The ECM Synchronika didn't take too long to get setup and running. I love the lever / joy-stick style valves and prefer the brew lever over pressing a button. My wife gets a vanilla latte every morning too, and that gives her a great start to her day. I believe the price leap and quality improvements on this machine (compared to what I had) are well worth the cost. I plan on using this machine for at least another 10 years, hopefully longer.

Happy Brew-Monster...

Love my ECM Synchronika
Review by Michael S. on 4 Dec 2017 review stating Love my ECM Synchronika
Have had my Synchronika since September of 2016 and have enjoyed hundreds of (mainly) cappuccinos. In addition to being a beautiful machine it operates flawlessly. I was originally looking at the Profitec Pro 700 but decided on the Synchronika because of the levers for the steam and hot water. I am extremely satisfied with this purchase.

ECM Synchronika
Review by Dave M. on 20 Nov 2017 review stating ECM Synchronika
Having placed an order for the Synchronika after owning/using a small professional HX machine, I was not sure if I was heading for an upgrade, downgrade or even trade. I am happy to tell you that this machine is every bit as heavy & solid as my pro machine, and the fit & finish is top notch. The espresso it produces is spectacular. I can routinely make latte art with the foam it can produce. After more than 6 months of daily use, the only small issue I have encountered is that the hot water arm and steam arm have loosened a bit, not holding their position as firmly and precisely as when the machine arrived.

It's a win/win/win. Looks, performance and fit & finish.

ECM Synchronika Impresses
Review by Charles F. on 19 Nov 2017 review stating ECM Synchronika Impresses
This is my first espresso machine I ever purchased. I am so glad I got this one. I was up in the air with a Rocket Dual boiler but I am glad I went with the sticks and not turning knobs to steam. I’ve been looking to get a machine for about 5 years. I am so glad I got this. Whole Latte Love was very supportive in every step of the way. Pre sales questions, setup, post sales questions, you name it, they are very knowledgeable and have great customer service. I paired this piece of machinery with the new Ceado E37S in black. I am running on reservoir so I had to turn the pump up a bit. When it’s shipped they are tested on water line pressure. So when I was running on reservoir I was at 8 bar. So one minute adjustment I’m right at 9 bar. Pulls great shots. I had a large learning curve because I am not coming from another machine. I never tamped a shot before or steamed milk before. With this machine I was making great Cappuccinos, lattes, ristrettos, long blacks, you name it in a matter of minutes. After owning now for about 6 months I do see that the steam power is a bit weak. Maybe they make a 4-hole tip that I can install. I will have to call Mark again. Hahaha. I’ve heard reviews about the digital shot timer peeling. I haven’t had this problem. I’m thinking maybe someone was wearing a ring or hit it with a portafilter or something. This thing is rock solid. I use Poland Spring water as suggested by manufacturer. They don’t recommend descaling so they say use Poland Spring water. I pull a nice 1.5-1.8 ounce double in about 25-29 seconds from first pull with a dose of about 18 grams suggested by Mark. I bought the calibrated tamper to help me learn what proper tamp pressure should be. For a few weeks now I’ve switched to the nice ECM tamper that comes with the machine and it fits perfect inside on an angle in the ECM tamp station. The drip tray does get scratched easily from cups and stuff but not a big deal. This is a piece of art. I am very happy with my purchase. I would highly recommend this machine for someone in the market looking for a quality machine.

Makes Mornings Great
Review by Shaun C. on 11 Nov 2017 review stating Makes Mornings Great
Great espresso makes a great morning! This machine is quiet and consistent. Plumbed in a water line and drain line, good features. Had an older Giotto machine with the dials for steam and water and after some silly hand-memory time have come to like these levers better. Performs as expected which is far better than an old single boiler E61 machine. While I can't compare to other newer machines, I can say that this machine is worth the spend and wish I would have upgraded sooner.

Amazing Espresso Machine!!!
Review by Ilya N. on 8 Nov 2017 review stating Amazing Espresso Machine!!!
I absolutely love the Synchronika!!! Is it expensive? Yes, but worth every penny. The PID is extremely precise and no wait time between brewing and steaming for a few cups. It’s in no way a commercial grade machine but I’ve entertained making up to 10-15 lattes in a row with no problems. The looks speak for themselves of course. I initially wanted to save and get a Profitec but very happy that opted in for this one instead.

ECM Synchronika Dual Boiler Espresso Machine
Review by Micheal N. on 7 Nov 2017 review stating ECM Synchronika Dual Boiler Espresso Machine
A wonderful machine. Everything is of the highest quality. It makes it easy to get out of bed and make your morning espresso. After owning for almost a year now my only complaint is that the steam wand may be a bit underpowered. Also, there does not appear to be anyway to descale the boilers on dual boiler machines, such as this. I bought the BestMax filter system, but I worry that the boilers may still have scaling issues over time.

ECM Synchronika Dual Boiler Espresso Machine
Review by Glen T. on 3 Nov 2017 review stating ECM Synchronika Dual Boiler Espresso Machine
My wife and I love the whole coffee experience. Not just drinking great tasting coffee, but all the "labor of love" that goes into it. We enjoy the whole process of creating the perfect cup with the reward of amazing flavor at the end! We had been using a very good manual espresso machine where we actually "pulled the shot". The coffee was very good but we were never able to get the same depth of flavor that we were used to from some of our favorite coffee shops. I even roast our own coffee and create amazing flavor profiles with beans from around the world but we were still not getting all of the flavor. Enter the ECM Synchronika Dual Boiler Espresso Machine. This made all the difference in the world. After a couple of months of dialing in the grind, the weight and timing of the shot... we've got the best tasting espresso we've ever had! Even better than all the other shops. We essentially have the same equipment to work with as they do, just in a single group design. We couldn't be happier now that we have this machine!
